Professor Anthony G. Cohn was awarded the EurAI Distinguished Service Award 2024 for his outstanding contributions to the field of Artificial Intelligence, giving over four decades of extensive service to the European and International research communities.
He is internationally recognised as one of the founders and leading researchers in the field of qualitative spatial reasoning (QSR). He has also made many contributions to other areas of AI, including robotics, signal fusion/interpretation, cognitive vision and ontology-based decision support systems, particularly for applications in the built environment.
Tony has been extensively serving the European AI community since the 1980s when he was a local co-organiser for AISB-1985, and subsequently Treasurer, and Chairman of AISB. He was also involved in ECCAI / EurAI as Treasurer (1988-90), the 4th President (1990–92), and as Programme Chair of ECAI-1994. He has also been on many Programme Committees for conferences held in Europe.
He has been chair of the Spatial Cognition Conference series and on the Advisory Board for the TAILOR network. He is currently Chair of the BCS Awards Committee and is on the International Advisory Board for the CYENS Centre of Excellence in Cyprus. He has also given extensive service in the wider international arena: he was Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Artificial Intelligence, Director of KR Inc for 23 years, has been Co-Editor-in-Chief of the interdisciplinary journal Spatial Cognition and Computation since 2003, and is currently Chair of the AAAI Publications Committee.
Professor Cohn is a founding EurAI Fellow (1999), and a Fellow of AISB, AAAI, AAIA, IET, the Royal Academy of Engineering (the UK’s national engineering academy), the Learned Society of Wales, and the British Computer Society.
