Distinguished Service Award 2026

Professor Jérôme Lang has been awarded the EurAI Distinguished Service Award 2026 for helping establish the field of computational social choice, providing mentorship and advice to several generations of AI researchers, and building bridges between theory and applications.

His exemplary track record of service to the AI community includes: chairing major European and international conferences (both as a program chair and as a general chair, such as ECAI-2020 and IJCAI-ECAI 2018, and workshop chair at ECAI-2012), serving as a journal editor, reviewing countless PhD theses, starting the COMSOC workshop series and editing the Handbook of Computational Social Choice.

But there is also an aspect of his service to the computational social choice community that is harder to capture by numbers: he recognised computational social choice as an emerging area of research, built a collaborative community around it, mentored many junior researchers in the field, and promoted the area to the broader AI community.

Jérôme was elected a EurAI Fellow in 2009, served on the EurAI Board (2010-2016) and has been a member of the EurAI Fellows' Committee (2023-2026).
