The 2024 EurAI Artificial Intelligence Dissertation Award is awarded to Jannik Peters for his PhD "Facets of Proportionality: Selecting Committees, Budgets, and Clusters", defended at the Technische Universität Berlin (Germany) on August 13th, 2024.
Jannik's dissertation makes exceptional contributions in the domains of computational social choice (COMSOC) and collective decision-making. The work develops a comprehensive theory of proportional representation that extends far beyond traditional voting scenarios to encompass multiwinner elections, participatory budgeting, clustering, and sortition. Its results have immediate applications in the design of parliamentary elections, online civic participation platforms and citizens’ assemblies. What sets Jannik’s thesis apart is its theoretical depth, practical relevance, and remarkable clarity in presentation.
At this 2024 EurAI Dissertation Award edition, 28 theses from 14 different countries were submitted. The jury consisted of 24 academic researchers.
